Bay's Young team win 'El Coastal' comfortably with some good football

The Crest Stadium was buzzing with excitement on November 4th, 2024, as Herne Bay U23 delivered a thrilling performance to secure a 6-3 victory over Whitstable Town U23. The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, packed with goals and non-stop action that kept the fans on the edge of their seats.

The game started with a bang as Whitstable Town took an early lead just 6 minutes in. However, Herne Bay quickly responded, equalizing just four minutes later from a well-rehearsed corner set play. Max Woodfine just turned 18 years old headed home at the front post from a Jamie Lartice 17 years olds driven corner, showcasing the team’s training ground efforts.

Despite a brief lapse in concentration that saw Herne Bay concede again within 40 seconds of the restart, the team showed resilience. Jamie Lartice brought the score level once more with a stunning volley into the bottom corner, following excellent work down the right wing by Patrick Da Lomba, who was a constant thorn in the side of the Whitstable defence all night, it showed how much he has developed in the last 8 games by playing Step 6 with Bridon Ropes.

Herne Bay took the lead for the first time 10 minutes before halftime. Marlon Agbolade the 18 year old Center-back currently on loan at Larkfield, made a fantastic solo run into the box, only to be brought down for a penalty. Jamie Lartice stepped up to convert, securing his brace and sending Herne Bay into the break with a 3-2 advantage.

The second half began with Whitstable Town levelling the game again, mirroring their first goal with a long diagonal ball that caught Herne Bay’s defence off guard.

But from this point on, Herne Bay shifted up a gear. Their intensity and quick passing dominated possession, and their hard work paid off.

In the 61st minute, Patrick Da Lomba tapped in at the back post to make it 4-3 after another Lartice dangerous cross.

Following a period of sustained pressure. Just four minutes later, Alfie Hill 17 years old capitalized on some poor defending, driving into the box cutting back and and firing home to extend the lead to 5-3.

The final nail in the coffin came from Oscar Walter also 17 years old sealed the derby win, also known as “El Coastal,” with a spectacular solo run and a shot from outside the 19-yard box that nestled into the bottom corner.

The match ended on a high note for Herne Bay, with the goalkeeper pulling off a fantastic save from a powerful penalty kick, ensuring the score line remained 6-3. The young team including two 16 year olds, put on a stellar performance in front of first-team manager Steve Lovell, bouncing back impressively after two tough results on the road.

This victory not only delighted the fans but also provided valuable learning lessons for the Herne Bay U23 squad, showcasing their potential and resilience. The supporters left the Crest Stadium with smiles on their faces, eagerly anticipating the next match.
